Boulder's Subaru Experts

Subarus are built for Colorado driving. Boulder loves them. We have spent years specializing in keeping them running, from head gasket service to AWD diagnostics.

Subaru repair and service at Legacy Automotive in Boulder, Colorado

Boulder may be the unofficial Subaru capital of Colorado. We are the shop that specializes in keeping them on the road, with the tools, the experience, and the parts knowledge to do the work the right way.

Why Subaru Owners Trust Us

Subaru takes a specialist.

Generalist shops can change the oil. Subaru-specific service deserves a Subaru-specific approach.

Boxer engine knowledge

Subaru's horizontally-opposed boxer engine has its own service quirks. Head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and rear main seals all behave differently than a typical inline four. Our technicians have spent years inside boxers and know what to look for before you do.

AWD and viscous coupling specialists

Subaru's symmetrical AWD is brilliant when healthy and expensive when ignored. Mismatched tire sizes, neglected differential fluid, and worn viscous couplings create real damage. We diagnose and service the entire AWD driveline.

Head gasket experience

The 2.5L EJ25 head gasket story is well-known. We have done the job many, many times. We know which symptoms point to head gaskets, which point to something cheaper, and how to do the job right the first time.

CVT service know-how

CVTs are not regular automatic transmissions. They need CVT-specific fluid on the proper interval. We service Subaru CVTs with the right fluid, the right procedure, and the right scan tool adaptations afterward.

Common Subaru Services

Subaru work we do every week.

These are the services Subaru owners bring to us most often. Each one is a job our techs have done many, many times.

Head gasket replacement

Outback, Forester, Legacy, and Impreza head gaskets done with quality MLS gaskets, fresh head bolts where required, and a proper resurface check. Cooling system flushed and refilled with the correct Subaru-spec coolant.

Timing components (especially 2.5L)

Timing belt, tensioner, idlers, water pump, and seals replaced as a full kit on belt-driven 2.5L engines. Proper torque and timing verification before the engine sees its first start.

CVT fluid service and diagnosis

CVT-specific fluid (Subaru CVTF) on the proper interval. Live data scan and adaptations performed. We do not flush a CVT that should not be flushed.

AWD viscous coupling and rear differential service

Viscous coupling testing, rear differential fluid service with the correct gear oil, and tire-size matching to protect the AWD driveline.

Wheel bearing replacement

Front and rear wheel bearings on Subarus wear in patterns we know well. Pressed bearings done with the right tools and proper torque on the axle nut.

Oil consumption issues (FB engines)

FB-series engines (2011 to roughly 2015) have a documented oil consumption pattern. We diagnose, document, and address per Subaru's known service procedures.

Catalytic converter service

Diagnosis before replacement. We look for upstream causes (rich fueling, oil burning) before condemning a catalytic converter, then use OEM-spec or quality aftermarket cats when replacement is needed.

Models We Service

Every Subaru, current and classic.

From the brand-new Solterra back to the Justy and SVX, we service them all. If it has the Pleiades on the grille, we work on it.

The Subaru Difference in Boulder

Boulder is Subaru country.

Look around any Boulder trailhead, ski lot, or grocery store. The Subaru count is not subtle. The reason is simple. Subarus fit how Boulder lives. Symmetrical AWD handles the snowstorms and the gravel. Ground clearance handles the trailheads. The footprint fits both downtown and the canyon roads.

A specialist matters more for Subaru than for many other brands. The boxer engine layout, the symmetrical AWD driveline, and the CVT all have service patterns that reward experience and punish guesswork. A shop that sees Subarus every day knows the patterns. A shop that sees one a month does not.

We are that shop. Subaru work is a major share of what we do, and Boulder Subaru owners drive across town and across the county to bring their cars here.

Subaru Owners Talk

What Boulder Subaru drivers say.

I had a head gasket leak on my 2010 Outback and was quoted thousands at the dealer. Legacy did the job for less, used a better gasket, and threw in the timing belt because it was due. Three years later, no issues.

My Forester started shuddering on acceleration. The dealer wanted to replace the whole CVT. Legacy did a fluid service and adaptation, and the shudder was gone. Saved me thousands.

WRX guy here. Legacy treats my car like a Subaru, not like a problem. They know the platform and they respect what I have done to it. Only shop I trust besides my own garage.

Common Questions

Subaru questions, answered.

No. The well-known head gasket pattern affects the EJ-series 2.5L engines, particularly from the late 1990s through the 2000s. Newer FA and FB engines have different patterns. Some Subarus go to high mileage without head gasket issues. We can inspect your specific vehicle and tell you whether it shows early signs.
